The Reedy Creek Nature Center is demonstrating how to make crafts from recycled holiday cards.

Crafters can join the fun at the Reedy Creek Nature Center, located at 2900 Rocky River Road in Charlotte, Saturday December 15, from 10 to 11 a.m.

The class is open to ages six and up.

The cost is free. Registration is required.

Charlotte Motor Speedway looking at busy Thanksgiving

CONCORD - Later this afternoon Charlotte Motor Speedway will kick off its busiest Thanksgiving week ever with the grand opening of Speedway Christmas, including special appearances by NASCAR Hall of Famer and five-time Coca-Cola 600 champion Darrell Waltrip and his brother, 1996 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race winner and NASCAR team owner Michael Waltrip.

The Waltrip brothers will make a special announcement regarding the speedway’s Season of Giving before helping Charlotte Motor Speedway President and General Manager Marcus Smith turn on the show’s more than 3 million lights and lead the way through opening night at the 3.5-mile holiday extravaganza.

National Adoption Day celebrated with Foster Care Adoptions Finalizations

On Saturday, November 17th beginning at 9 a.m. in Courtroom 5370 of the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, children from four different agencies, Another Choice for Black Children, Children's Home Society, Christian Adoption, and Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services, are scheduled to be adopted.

Nearly all are currently in Mecklenburg County’s foster care system. The adoptions will be finalized during a special session of court, followed by a reception to celebrate the new families.

The event, part of National Adoption Day, is free and open to the public.

For the ninth year in a row, Mecklenburg County Juvenile Court, the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court’s Office, Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services, and the Guardian Ad Litem program are co-sponsoring this event.

The court session will be presided over by District Court Judge Louis A. Trosch, Jr.

CHARLOTTE, NC - UniverSoul Circus has created a big top thrill-ride infused with an unparalleled global mix of circus artistry, music, dance and style – all inspired by reflections of the world around US.

The UniverSoul Circus 2012 production, entitled “US,” features Shaolin Kung Fu acrobats from China, bone-breaking contortionists with hop-hop flair from Guinea, and hilarious acrobatic comedy from South Africa.

The Circus will take place November 13 through the 18 at the Freedom Mart parking lot in Charlotte.

Clear Creek Elementary gets new principal

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education appointed Deborah McSwain Heath principal at Clear Creek Elementary. Heath is currently an assistant principal of instruction at Independence High School.

She began her career with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a language arts teacher at Carmel Middle School in 1987. She has also taught language arts and social studies at Druid Hills Elementary, Albemarle Road Elementary, Northeast Middle and Mint Hill Middle schools. Heath became a principal intern at Independence in 2006 and an assistant principal in 2007.  

Heath has a master’s in school administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she also earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary and middle grades education.

Dowd YMCA Youth Basketball registraion open

The Dowd YMCA 2012 Youth Basketball League registration is open until November 1.

Registration is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 13.

Register now, officials say space is limited.

The Dowd YMCA has a great group of volunteer coaches/parents, some of whom have been with the program for over 30 years.

The YMCA said they are looking forward to an exciting season, and would love to have you be apart of it!

Students convert Mustang to Electric Vehicle Uptown during DNC

 CHARLOTTE, NC - Get ready to start your engines and plug in! Beginning Monday, September 3 at 10 a.m., students from Charlotte’s Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology will work to convert a standard 1992 Ford Mustang to a street legal, full-sized electric vehicle.

Working with the national EV Challenge program and educators from Discovery Place, the students will convert the vehicle over a four-day period in the Mayor’s Legacy Village, located adjacent to the Harvey B. Gantt Center.

The conversion will kick off during CarolinaFest, the family-friendly, community celebration that launches Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. The public is invited to visit with the students throughout the week to observe the conversion process.

When the vehicle is complete, it will be driven to Discovery Place and plugged into the electric vehicle charging station located in the Museum’s Parking Deck.
