Police: Man shoots good Samaritan, wrecks after police chase | News
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- A man has been charged after an assault with a deadly weapon where a person trying to help a stranger was shot, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The incident began on Wednesday just before 10 a.m. when officers responded to the intersection of Glory Street and W. Sugar Creek Road for a domestic disturbance where one subject was shot.
Once on scene, officers located a female in the roadway that had been shot in the leg. Witnesses on told police that they had stopped at the intersection due to a black Honda Accord stopped in the middle of the roadway. Beside it, the witnesses said, was a male striking a female, the report states.
The witnesses and the gunshot victim attempted to assist the woman by restraining the man striking her, until he began to pull a gun from his waistband. The witnesses and the victim began to back up, and the man fired his weapon, striking the female victim in the leg.
The man, later identified as Deandre Tavius White, 18, then returned to the vehicle with the woman he had reportedly been striking and left the scene.
The victim was transported to CMC-Main and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police say she did not know the man or the woman he was allegedly in an altercation with.
A short time later, officers located the suspect vehicle with White inside near The Plaza and Wilann Drive, and tried to pull him over, but he refused to stop the vehicle, police told WBTV.
After a short chase, White's vehicle struck another vehicle that was stopped at the intersection of E. WT Harris Boulevard and Hickory Grove Road. He then fled from the scene on foot before officers caught and arrested him on the opposite side of the intersection at the Kangaroo Express Gas Station.
White was taken to CMC-Main for minor injuries from the vehicle accident before being released and taken to the Law Enforcement Center.
The driver in the vehicle White struck was not injured.
White was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernelia, flee to elude arrest with motor, reckless driving, no operator's license, hit and run, speeding, and resist obstruct and delay.
