YWCA makes stand on Fall Prevention

The Young Womens Christians Association of Charlotte is now offering a free Fall Prevention Course for senior citizens.

The Center for Aging is launching a first of its kind program in Charlotte which has already proven to significantly reduce falls in seniors.

This medically developed program, led by Arthritis Foundation of America certified trainers, gives participants the skills and strength to help preserve quality of life.

Those interested in fall prevention can join a class at the YWCA, located at 3420 Park Road in Charlotte, Tuesday June 4 or Thursday Jun 6, from 10:15 a.m. until 11:15 a.m.

The cost is free, and the program is open to those ages 60 or better and not wheelchair bound.

For more information on the course, call 704-606-1144.

Weekend starts off dry, but could end in rain

Weekend starts off dry, but could end in rain

We’re starting off the month of June on a warm but dry note, but the same system that brought tornadoes to Oklahoma could bring storms back into the mix on Sunday.

Saturday brought high humidity with highs in the mid 80s. We bump up the rain chances as we head into the second half of the weekend, with a possibility of a late evening thunderstorm associated with an incoming cold front on Sunday night.

The best rain chances are still expected Monday as the front moves through.

Warning about a student financial aid scams

Warning about a student financial aid scams

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Money is top of mind for many high school seniors, particularly how to get enough of it through loans, scholarships, and other financial aid to pay for college.

The process is made more difficult thanks to the many scam artists preying on unsuspecting young people.

LeOnda Sizer is one of them. She was simply applying for financial aid for cosmetology school when the difference between .gov and .com made all the difference.

"I typed in .com because everything is that way and I started filling out the information. I gave everything from my social security number and date of birth to my address, all of it," Sizer said.

The N.C. Department of Transportation will be closing lanes intermittently on Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) West between Eastway Drive and Briar Creek Road in Charlotte beginning at 3 a.m. Saturday, June 1, weather permitting.

Crews with contractor Ferebee Corp. will be making improvements to the roadway near adjacent manhole covers, requiring temporary lane closures to pour concrete. No closures will be needed in the eastbound lanes.

Officials say all lanes will open by 2 p.m. Saturday.

Motorists may avoid delays by using Monroe Road or Central Avenue as alternate routes to uptown Charlotte.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.

NC Residents encouraged to prepare for hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1, and Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin is reminding all North Carolinians to prepare for severe weather by visiting www.NCHurriClaims.com.

NCHurriClaims.com is North Carolina’s source of insurance-related information pertaining to hurricanes and other natural disasters. The website includes tips for before and after a storm, descriptions of insurance coverages, important contact information and more.

“Everyone in North Carolina is at potential risk of property damage or loss from hurricanes or other natural disasters,” said Goodwin. “Don’t wait until a storm is approaching to prepare.”

To prepare for hurricane season:

  • Review your insurance policies. Make sure that you have appropriate insurance coverage for your needs. Know what your policy does and does not cover.
