Pizza delivery worker robbed at gunpoint in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police are looking for a suspect who robbed a pizza delivery worker at gunpoint in east Charlotte Tuesday night.

The robbery happened along the 4000 block of Sunridge Lane around 9:12 p.m..

The victim is an employee with Papa John's Pizza.

According to the police report, the victim was delivering a pizza at the above address when he was ordered to move to a nearby location where he was robbed.

The suspect stole an undisclosed amount of cash and the victim's cell phone. 

The victim was not injured during the incident.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - In a political shocker, Mecklenburg County Commissioner Jennifer Roberts was re-elected Monday night as chairman of the commission.

Going into the night sources were telling us the newly elected commission's four Republicans were going to join forces with Democrat Harold Cogdell to elect him chairman and Republican Jim Pendergraph vice-chairman.

Cogdell did vote to help Pendergraph become vice-chairman, but announced he would support Roberts instead of himself as chairman.

MATTHEWS - Wingate University has announced plans to build a $5 million educational center at Wingate Commons in Matthews to serve adult students in the metro Charlotte area.

The center will open in 2013 on an eight-acre site near I-485 Exit 52 at John Street.

Mentally-challenged woman sexually assaulted in east Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police are investigating a sexual assault which happened in east Charlotte this weekend involving a mentally-challenged woman.

The incident happened at an apartment on Monroe Road, but we are not releasing the exact location to protect the victim's identity.  

The alleged incident happened Saturday, Dec. 4, after 3:10 p.m.

The police report says the suspect confronted the 21-year-old victim outside her apartment and forced her back inside where she was forcibly sodomized.

The woman was seriously injured and treated at Presbyterian Hospital, the police report said.

The victim told police she did not know the suspect.

Chipp Bailey sworn in as Mecklenburg County's new Sheriff

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Chipp Bailey was sworn in as the new Sheriff of Mecklenburg County Monday morning.

Bailey received the oath of office as Mecklenburg County's twenty-fourth Sheriff of record in a ceremony at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center.

In addition to the swearing-in of the Sheriff, approximately 300 deputy sheriffs also took the oath of office.

"I – and my staff - take this oath very seriously," said Bailey, "to support and maintain the Constitution and laws of the United States and the Constitution and laws of the State of North Carolina.  In November, the people of this county placed their trust in me to protect and serve them; I will do this to the best of my ability." 

In the coming weeks, nearly 1,000 detention officers and civilian support employees will take the oath to faithfully follow the rules and regulations of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
