Ready to play ball?  Rec league registration starts today!

MECKLENBURG COUNTY – The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department invites parents with children ages 4-12 interested in playing baseball to register for the upcoming spring co-ed recreation season.

Space is limited, so register early! A birth certificate is required to establish proof of age of the child as of May 1, 2011.
 
The registration fee is $65, which includes league play and uniform. Registration begins Monday, Jan. 31 and ends Friday, Feb. 25. League play runs April through June with practices beginning in March.

Charlotte recycling effort, a huge success!

Charlotte -- Hundreds of people from the Charlotte area drove to the Park Road Shopping Center to drop off their old electronic devices for recycling this weekend. Thousands of old televisions, computers and other electronic gadgets were collected by the Goodwill, in conjuction with "Do Your Part" and WBTV on Saturday and Sunday.

The event was a huge success, with 15 semi-truck trailer filled for recycling. The Goodwill will refurbish and resell what it can to support its charitable efforts. Other items will be recycled using environmentally approved methods. The goal is to keep electronic waste out of public landfills where they can present environmental problems from the metals and chemicals used in manufacturing

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Walmart that was slated to go up on Independence Boulevard years ago is finally under construction and residents are hopeful it will bring more business back to the eastside.

The store will be a cornerstone in the troubled spot of Charlotte, which has been struggling economically for years.

When Paul Williams took over the Earth Angel clothing store along Independence boulevard , business was booming.

That was 10 years ago.

Charlotte -- If you're wanting to get rid of that old television or computer equipment the environmentally friendly way, this weekend is the time to do it. Do Your Part, in cooperation with WBTV and Goodwill, is collecting a variety of electronic waste at the Park Road Shopping Center on Saturday and Sunday.

Several Charlotteans showed up first thing Saturday morning to unload car and truck loads of old tv's, computers and other electronic items, as WBTV's Eric Thomas and Do Your Part's Terri Bennett appeared live on WBTV Morning News.

County adds more revaluation meetings

MECKLENBURG COUNTY - More public meetings concerning Mecklenburg County property revaluation have been announced.

Revaluation is the process of reappraisal of all properties within the County for tax assessment purposes, and is required once at least every eight years by North Carolina law. The last reappraisal in Mecklenburg County was in 2003.

Over time, the real estate market changes, and market prices deviate from the assessed values estimated during the previous reappraisal. A revaluation does two important things:
