Burglar crawls under house and steals copper pipes

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A burglar went to extreme means to steal hundreds of dollars worth of copper from an east Charlotte home.

The burglary occurred at 4239 Donnybrook Place between 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18, and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1.

After damaging a wooden fence surrounding the house, the burglar entered the unlocked crawlspace and removed all the copper water pipes.

The stolen pipes are worth approximately $1,000.

No arrest had been made in the case as of Friday, June 3.

Teen girls kidnapped and sexually assaulted

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Two teen girls say they were kidnapped and sexually assaulted in east Charlotte a week ago.

The alleged incident occurred on Friday May 27, at an apartment on Community Circle located near the intersection of Eastway Drive and The Plaza.

The teens, ages 15 and 14, told police two adult males forced them into a car and drove them to a second location where they were sexually assaulted.

As of Friday, June 3, a police spokesman told WBTV no arrests have been made.

We have talked to you before about monitoring what your kids post on Facebook or check in location software like Foursquare to protect them from cyberstalking and child predators.  Now we have news of a recent attempted kidnapping where police believe that the kid's social networking activities made him a target.

WBTV's cyber expert, Theresa Payton, talks to us about what happened and what we can learn from a narrowly avoided tragedy.

Eugene Kaspersky is a legend in the security field.  His son Vanya, also known as "Ivan" is 20-years-old and was kidnapped on his way to work.  The overall story is terrible but it has a happy ending.

Ivan is alive and home safe and sound.  When police started investigating, they and his Dad, Eugene, believe that the kidnappers were tracking his son using social networking.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Krispy Kreme can add the word "free" to its familiar "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign for at least one day.
     
The Winston-Salem based treat maker is observing National Doughnut Day at its outlets in North Carolina and across the nation by giving each customer one free doughnut of their choice.
     
National Doughnut Day was established in Chicago in 1938 by The Salvation Army as a way to pay homage to the young women who helped soldiers during World War I and World War II with hand-made doughnuts.

Two years ago this month the experts said the Great Recession technically came to an end.

But today trying telling that to the unemployed, the drivers who pay 4 bucks a gallon, the struggling homeowners.

It's like having the flu and your doctor telling you you're just fine.

You might be asking, when are we gonna get better?

Just as this wasn't your typical recession, this isn't a typical recovery.  Many people aren't feeling the recovery.

Cricket store teen employee robbed at gunpoint

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A teen clerk working at a cell phone store in east Charlotte was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday afternoon.

The robbery was at the Cricket store located at 5618 Albemarle Road.

Around 2:32 p.m., the gunman entered the store wearing a mask.

The man jumped over the counter and demanded money from the register.

The 19-year-old girl says the gunman pointed a gun at her.

The gunman left the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The clerk was not hurt.

Burglar enters unlocked door and steals electronics from home

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Police say a burglar stole electronics worth hundreds of dollars by simply entering a home through an unlocked rear door.

The burglary occurred in the 1000 block of Nancy Drive near the intersection of N. Wendover Road and Monroe Road.

The homeowner said the crime occurred Tuesday between 12:50 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The burglar stole an xBox 360, PlayStation 3, Hewlett Packard laptop, and various video games.

The value of the stolen items was more than $2,300.

Police say you should make sure all doors and windows are locked, even if you are only stepping outside for a short period of time.
